V2V-11, Leg 5 -- Craig CO to Castle Rock CO

Tom picked out a perfect motel at the end of Leg 4 in Craig CO -- Bear Valley Inn, 755 East Victory Way, Craig, CO. A very nice, recently refurbished motel. The managers were very nice to us, bike towels, open pit fire, ice for beer, and some morning supplies. Stop it and visit for the night if you are every in or near Craig CO.

Dean, Karma and I set out to meet up with the V2V from Denver. We had a great ride, and Karma was kind enough to let Dean and I each take a turn on Karma's new Cross Country. Here is a pic of Karma filling up on the way...

Our route took us from Denver down US-285 to Buena Vista and Leadville for lunch on US-24. Here is a shot in Leadville:

From Leadville we rode to I-70 via US-24, a spectacular road, with canyons, valleys and twisties. The remnants of the former base of the 10th Mountain Division is in one of the valleys along this highway.

We then took CO-131 north and intersected with 20 Mile Road to Craig, where we met up with the Leg 4 gang.

Dinner was two blocks away, a nice walk, good chow and good friends...

A ritual stop on top of Berthoud Pass. Highest point along the Victory Highway.

When we dropped off the pass to I-70, we diverted from the Victory Highway, as the highway has been mostly paved over and bulldozed from sight. Lunch was in Georgetown, a peaceful old mining town...

A look at the old and new, Tom and Patti's '99 KYSO and Karma's Cross Country.

From Georgetown, we spun down I-70 to Idaho Springs, where we headed over to Echo Lake at the entrance to the Mt Evans Road.

We then headed towards Evergreen and some nice, moderate speed twisties, then down to CO-470 and Castle Rock for the end of the leg. Goodbyes were said by those travels, Victory Riders!

Still think the best part was the people I got to meet. Will have to spend a good deal more time riding mountains before I will be comfortable going into tight turns while going down hill, something I just don't get to do here in the mid-west.
Bear Valley Inn was my favorite over night stop of what I did of the V2V and that covers a good distance as I did finish nine of the fourteen legs.
