Got to get there, VA to CA in 60 hours

I've got to take a little business trip to the Mojave just northeast of Barstow California. Instead of flying out there at 30,000 feet in a few hours, I've decided to take a day of vacation and the weekend to travel. It is a choice that I am making and feel, having done a few long distance rides already, that this will be doable. Now, by far, 2,500 miles will be the most I've done in a single one-way ride in any length of time. I have a documented IBA 1,036 miles in 15 hours, and I've done a few 1,200 place rides in under 19 hours, and at least one 1,500 in 36 hours.

I've begun the detail look at the bike and so far have changed the clutch fluid and plan on putting on a tire next week. The trip will begin the wee hours of Friday, June 25, 2010 and end on Sunday June 27, 2010 in Barstow, CA. I'll repeat the process coming back leaving Barstow the morning of July 9, 2010 and arriving back in VA on July 12th.

Another thing I need to do is to get in shape, with just under 3 weeks to go I've started a little walking, and I've been doing push ups. Hopefully I can be up to running a mile or two before I depart.

Feel free to comments and I'll capture some thoughts leading up and involving the ride here in the blogs.

With less than two weeks before departure my mind is abuzz. I purchased a CamelBak 50oz minimule and will start wearing it to get used to it. I've checked with the dealer and the only thing I'll need at the moment is new wheel bearings, new rear tire, oil change and air filter. This is all normal stuff and of little concern but needs to be done.

My take off time is a major concern though, because I've got to get enough ground the first day to make it to Barstow late evening. I've just got from the time I get off work Thursday, to Sunday night to do it. I had planned to leave around 4am Friday morning, but I might head out Thursday night and roll into Friday midday, rest and then hit the evening hours. My biggest enemy against man and machine will be the "hot" mid-day once I get west.

It's funny at the number of people who thinks this is totally insane, perhaps it is, but I'm looking forward to riding. I know it can and will be tiring, but it is a feat I have been looking foward too for many years, and I'm not getting any younger. This may be the only time I will do these many miles in such short period of time, but I would like to do at least the 48 states in 10 days ride before too long, then that would be it.
